Wood anemone, one of my favourite little spring flowers as a kid. It grows in great carpets along road sides and woodland glades, shining white stars with yellow eyes and these lovely tangled frond-like leaves. I always thought it’d probably be edible but nope…it’s a bastard in that regard. But more power to it, and if we don’t eat it we can enjoy the spectacle. Some interesting myths and legends around this flower being associated with death…I mean…look at it! This is a flower of life! . . . .

I cannot believe we are almost at the end of Anemone & Ranunculus season. As soon as the temps reach mid 20's for more than a few days, they go dormant. For us here in Western Cape that is usually by mid October. You might get a few more flowers after this time but they will be scarce. What to do with the corms in the ground? Italian Ranunculus usually multiplies under the ground and after the plant has died back and turned yellow-brown, it's time to dig the corms up, and safe them in a brown ba
