The ruins of Balmerino Abbey stand in a beautifully tranquil corner of northern Fife close to the south bank of the River Tay. The origins of the abbey date back to 1229. Queen Ermengarde, the widow of William the Lion, invited the Cistercians at Melrose Abbey to set up a daughter-house at Balmerino. When Edwin Mabry built his water powered mill in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, he had no way of knowing it would become one of the most photographed places in the United States. Located at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 176.1 in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, the gristmill and sawmill have been restored so that visitors can get a glimpse of life in rural Appalachia in the early 1900s. Neighboring Mabry Mill, you will find your favorite Patrick County destinations: Nancy’s Candy Co., Concord Corner
