The Lone Star Brewery opened in 1884 as the first large, mechanized brewery in Texas. The brewery’s original wooden structure was replaced by a complex of grand brick and stone buildings built from 1895 to 1904. Although the brewery eventually fell into complete disrepair, Nancy Brown Negley, a trustee of the San Antonio Museum Association, and Jack McGregor, director of the Witte Museum, spearheaded the effort to revive the campus as a home for the association’s vast art holdings.
