Ulmo (Quenya: "Pourer" or "Rainer"), also known as Ulubôz or Ullubôz, was an Ainu, one of the Aratar, and the Vala responsible for the control over the oceans of Arda. A lover of water, Ulmo was one of the Arda's chief architects and was always in a close friendship with Manwë.

For the remainder of the First Age, the Lord of Waters, Ulmo, alone of the Valar, visits the world beyond Aman. Ulmo directly influences the actions of Tuor, setting him on the path to find the hidden city of Gondolin.

Ulmo, Heru Rasa, or in English - Lord of the Seas, was second in power of the Valar only to Manwe. He was one of the nine Aratar, or those of chief power and reverence. He was a loner, the only one of the Valar to not have a wife (wife here is not in the common sense, but one who has similar interests and share deeds).

Even after the Darkening of Valinor and the Exile of the Noldor, while the other Valar turned away from Middle-earth, Ulmo remained faithful to the Elves and their new allies, the Edain. His power still extended through all the rivers and streams of the world, and so he was able to send messages and inspiration through the music of the water ...

After the toppling of the lamps in the Lost Tales, it is notable that Ulmo was not present when the Valar first departed the mainland for Valinor and that it was instead Ossë and the Oarni who dragged them there on an island ferry. Prior to this, Melkor had sweet-talked the Valar, claiming his actions were merely due to a little overexcitement ...

Ulmo counseled the Valar to leave the Awakened Elves to wander free in world and not to bring them to Aman. Ulmo came to Finrod and Turgon in their dreams and instructed them to build kingdoms 'of hidden strength ' against the coming days of evil.

He is next in might to Manwë, he loves both Elves and the Men and never abandoned them, not even when they lay under the wrath of Valar.
