The Dartford Crossing is currently the only way to cross the Thames east of London by road and links the counties of Essex and Kent via the QEII bridge for southbound traffic and two 1.4km-long tunnels for northbound journeys. The A282 also connects directly at both ends with the M25 London Orbital Motorway, one of the busiest motorways in Europe.

Despite all the hype, the M25 isn't even a full circle. The Dartford Crossing (comprising the Dartford Tunnels and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge) over the Thames in the east and its approach roads are designated A282, because the first Tunnel was built in the 1960s as a local connection.

The Dartford Crossing is a Primary Destination and river crossing on the A282 (not the M25 as commonly believed), spanning the River Thames between Dartford in Kent and Thurrock in Essex. It is one of the most important river crossings in Britain, and indeed in Europe.

It’s officially designated as the A282, a trunk road. Highways England says it was planned this way so that vehicles that are prohibited from motorways, such as mopeds, can use it. The crossing sits between junction 31 and junction 1a of the M25.
