Aug 23, 2017 · Greg and I spent the weekend in Detroit waiting for Monday's eclipse. It was too smoky to hike on Sunday, so we crossed the Detroit Dam and geocached our way up Kinney Creek Road. The final cache of the day was at a feature called Slate Rock, and hey, it happens to be a former lookout site!

Jul 16, 2016 · The Volcano Trail is an arterial trail that served as an integral part of the Forest Service communication and administrative network. It connected the basin of the North Santiam River with the Box Canyon Shelter, the Volcano/Kinney Creek Shelter, and the Slate Rock Lookout on the divide between the North and Middle Santiam Rivers.

The rock feels the full force of ocean gales and the lighthouse took 1 1/2 years to construct, with the workers often enduring miserable conditions. The lighthouse began operating in January, 1881, and was eventually decommissioned in 1957, a team of four keepers maintaining 24-hour operations until then.
