Importance of Economy Highest Since Great Recession The current 52% of voters rating the economy as an “extremely important” influence on their vote for president is the highest since October 2008 during the Great Recession, when 55% of voters said the same.

Metric Overview: This tracks Americans' mentions of the economy when asked to name, in their own words, the most important problem facing the country. Why This Matters: The percentage of Americans citing economic issues as the most important problem is a good indicator of the importance of the U.S. economy as an election issue.

Several professions have been included every year, while others have been asked on a rotating basis over time. The latest ethics ratings are from a Dec. 1-20, 2023, poll in which about 800 U.S. adults rated each of 23 professions.

The proportion saying the clergy have high or very high ethics is down from an average 56% in 2000-2009 to 30% today.
