Kokichi was abusive to him, but that's completely fine. He was never meant to be the hero in the first place, his role was never meant to be a saint. His catchphrase is quite literally, "I'm a liar" hes supposed to be immoral, hes supposed to do the wrong thing when it benefits him, and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that.
