Also the house where I used to live had an original GFCI wired so it would not provide proper protection to the downstream outlets because they were all connected to hot/line, but only the neutral wire went through the GFCI. In other words, if the GFCI tripped, there would be a loss of neutral hazard. Shop carefully for electricians.

You do this by pressing the "test" button on the GFCI, verifying that the GFCI tripped (there's no power) and then checking if other outlets in the area also lost power.
