(more than 1/2 of all labor hours are done by family members of the same family) On our farm almost all field work is done by family members, only thing that gets done that is hired is air plane spraying and some equipment repairs. We farm thousands of acres, own 2 self propelled sprayer.

He and my mom left that and set out to build a farm operation that was less than many others have done. But, in doing so, he built into myself and siblings something far more important and lasting.

Many of my good friends did some form of contract and seemed to turn out ok. A few attempted to remain independent but selling fats without a contract was very challenging.

6 天之前 · I began questioning the same thing this fall. Daughter went to 2 year ag program, out of a class of 30 ag kids, from farms, only my daughter and 1 other had ever driven a combine. So what’s the point - my wife jumped me about this during harvest. Our “harvest crew” is me and wife, occasionally dad. We’re just a small family farm.

Since then I have got a master's degree in Ag Engineering, passed the professional engineer's exam and spent about 15 years designing disks for a farm equipment manufacturer. Disks with 26 - 36" dia. blades have a pretty deep concavity.
