This article surveys the morphology and phylogeny of branchiostegal rays, the dermal bones that form the ventrolateral surface of the gill chamber in ray-finned fishes. It shows that restricted gill openings, a modification of the branchiostegal membrane, have evolved independently in multiple actinopterygian lineages and are not linked to specific ecological conditions.
