The American sycamore is a large, fast–growing, woody, deciduous tree in the platanus family (Platanaceae). It has a wide spreading, irregularly shaped crown and distinctive bark. It is native to southeastern Canada and the central and eastern United States.
American sycamore is widespread in the eastern United States, from Texas to Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin and into southern Ontario, Canada; apparently extirpated in Maine.
