My notepad txt file turned into weird characters - Super User
Nov 22, 2019 · Some years ago I wrote some notes in a .txt file (plain text) on Notepad and when I opened it recently it appeared with these weird characters. I don't know at what point it turned out like that, but it could have been in-between a transition from a Windows 7 -> External Drive -> Windows 10 (current).

Feb 26, 2024 · If I open textfile.txt in a hex editor, I can see that all the data in the file is correct and what I expect to be there. Notepad++ shows everything correctly as well. The weird part is I have used this same app before the weekend to generate many other files similar to textfile.txt and they all looked normal in windows.

Dec 16, 2012 · I had the same problem today. The contents of a USB Flash drive is shown in File Explorer – similar to the experience of OP – is "renamed with bizarre characters". But, different to the OP, the folders are possible to open. However, they are empty. Some of them are hidden (greyed out) and all of them have weird creation dates.
