Checkered garter snakes (Thamnophis marcianus) are commonly found in the United States, Mexico and some parts of Central America. In the United States, they are found in southwest California, southwestern Arizona and southern New Mexico.

There are three subspecies of Thamnophis marcianus, two occur in Mexico and south to Costa Rica. Possibly increasing their range due to irrigation in the desert. Apparently not negatively affected by introduced Bullfrogs.
