The Syriac Orthodox Church (Classical Syriac: ܥܺܕܬܳܐ ܣܽܘܪܝܳܝܬܳܐ ܬܪܺܝܨܰܬ݂ ܫܽܘܒܚܳܐ, romanized: ʿIdto Sūryoyto Trīṣath Shubḥo), [14] officially known as the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, [15] and informally as the Jacobite Church[16] is an Oriental Orthodox church that branched from the Church of Antioch.

Most Syrians are members of either the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch (700,000), or the Syriac Orthodox Church. The vast majority of Catholics belong to the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

In India, indigenous Eastern Christians (Saint Thomas Christians) of both liturgical traditions (East and West Syriac) are called Syrian Christians. The traditional East Syriac community is represented by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and the Chaldean Syrian Church of India.

2025年1月5日 · Since the 17th century, when a minority of the West Syrians were united with Rome and became the Syrian Catholic Church, the rest have been known as Syrian Orthodox, although they remained distinct from the Chalcedonian “Greek Orthodox” Christians of the area.

Few Christian denominations can claim the antiquity of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, whose foundations can be traced back to the very dawn of Christianity. The Church justifiably prides itself as being one of the earliest established apostolic churches.

Ecclesiastical history and traditions tell us that St. Peter the Apostle established a church in Antioch (+ 37) and became its first bishop. After his martyrdom, he was succeeded by Euodius for the converted Jews and St. Ignatius Noorono (the Illuminator) for the converted Gentiles.
