First, it increases the 'apparent' volume inside the speaker cabinet, and second, it breaks up potential standing wave acoustic vibrations inside the cabinet. I would argue that the later reason can only be accomplished to an extent.

2019年4月3日 · There was some extensive testing done on acoustical absorption properties of various insulation types several years ago, and fiberglass actually outperformed the 'specialty' speaker insulation. From what I recall, denim performed quite well too, though I think they were separate tests posted on different websites.

Still, you can get some effects from whatever is above it (like another shelf/cabinet top). You can also try tilting the speaker up by some degrees to better aim the sounds at your MLP.

Interestingly the article found that cones do not isolate the speaker as intended but can make the transmission of vibrations worse. My thinking was to bind the speaker cabinet tightly to a large mass (my brick wall) in order to dampen the vibrations.
