The short-nosed kangaroo rat is one of three subspecies of the San Joaquin kangaroo rat. The type specimen of D. n. brevinasus was collected in 1918 from Hays Station on the upper alluvial fan of Panoche Creek, Fresno County, California (Grinnell 1920).
Description: The short-nosed kangaroo rat is one of three subspecies of D. nitratoides, the San Joaquin kangaroo rat, the only four-toed kangaroo rat in the San Joaquin Valley. TL averages 237 mm, BL 102 mm and weight is about 44 g.

Dipodomys nitratoides are small kangaroo rats (one of the smallest species in the genus) with total body length ranging from 211-253 mm and tail length ranging from 120-152 mm (Whitaker 1996). Their long and powerful hind legs, reduced forelimbs, short neck, and long, well-muscled tails reflect their saltatory mode of locomotion.

All kangaroo rats closely resemble each other, but vary considerably in body size. This is the short-nosed kangaroo rat (D. nitratoides brevinasus), at the small end (35 - 40 g) of the K-rat size range. It is one of three very similar subspecies of the San Joaquin kangaroo rat.
