If you time it so the rat is close to you while it’s running and go into turn base mode you can attack it and kill it or go into turn base mode and hit it with a spell or arrow and kill it. I replied to the wrong chain, but I'm sure he'll get the message. Regardless, the best chance he has to practice is to just play the original Punch-Out, since there's an absence of a practice Rat fight in-game. If he has a Nintendo Online Subscription, he can get free access to the original Punch-Out via the NES Classics library.
