Find out the minimum wattage needed to charge your Surface, the wattage recommended for fast charging (if supported), and which Surface power supply model goes with your Surface device (if included). Charge your Surface using the power supply that was designed for your Surface or using a USB Type-C PD charger (for Surface devices that have a USB-C port).

To begin charging your Surface, connect the power supply that was designed for your Surface to a power source—a wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector. Depending on your Surface model, there are two ways in which you can charge it: Charge with the USB-C port.

Power cord care. Power cords, like any other metal wire or cable, can be weakened or damaged if repeatedly twisted or bent in the same spot. Here are a few things you can do to keep your power cord from being damaged: Avoid twisting or pinching your power cord. Don't wrap your power cord too tightly, especially around the power brick.

Solution 1: Check that you're using the power supply designed for your Surface. Using the right power supply makes sure your Surface is receiving enough power to operate the device and charge the battery. See Surface power supplies and charging requirements for more info. Inspect your power cord regularly, especially where it joins the power brick - Avoid pulling on the power cord when unplugging your Surface. Gently removing the connector from the charging port can help prevent damage to your power cord.

If you have an old-style AC power cord, you can order one free replacement AC power cord, for each eligible Surface Pro 3 you own, without proof of damage. Check to see whether you already have a new-style AC power cord (the cord you plug into an electrical outlet).

When your PC is plugged in, you might see a status message that says your PC is charging slowly or discharging when you hover over or select the Battery icon on the taskbar. This might happen if you’re using a charger that doesn't meet the requirements of your device.
