LNER Encyclopedia: Sir Nigel Gresley
Gresley was born on 19th June 1876, the fifth child of the rector of Netherseal (present day Derbyshire), the Reverend Nigel Gresley. Due to ante-natal complications his mother gave birth in Edinburgh, rather than Netherseal. Gresley was schooled at Marlborough College, before becoming an apprentice at Crewe Works.

Coal traffic on the mainline from Grantham to London was particularly heavy, and the GNR sought to reduce the number of mineral trains by increasing train loads.
