If I gave him and Mozart the same commission, Beethoven would pull a musical innovation out of his ass whereas Mozart would give me the creme of the crop of the bog standard. That's not to say that Mozart wouldn't give me the equivalent of a gold bar. I'm just saying that Beethoven would build me a safe and put like 7 gold bars in there.

Mar 30, 2018 · To oversimplify, Mozart kind of perfected the style of his period, while Beethoven had a more "experimental" style. Mozart's compositional process was ridiculously fast and natural compared to Beethoven who worked long hours and was a bit obsessive about every detail of his works. It doesn’t sound that simple to my ears. If you listen to Beethoven’s early works (not just the Symphonies) it becomes clear that Beethoven literally picked up where Mozart left off as the apotheosis of Classical style and morphed that into early Romanticism. Beethoven is the natural bridge to freer form Romanticism.

Mozart may well be so famous simply because he wrote SO MUCH music - he wrote 41 symphonies in his (relatively short) lifetime, compared to Beethoven who wrote only 9, yet lived much longer. Mozart wrote in almost every genre (except for an inexplicable hatred of the cello) and almost every instrument has Mozart works that feature them.
