Nature has used fractal designs for at least hundreds of millions of years. Only recently have human engineers begun copying natural fractals for inspiration to build successful devices.

Fractivities are hands-on projects that teach fractal concepts in a fun, artistic way. Students utilize their math skills in real-world applications and also work together as a team to create large fractal designs.

The guide explains what fractals are and illustrates examples of fractals in nature and mathematics. It includes two fractal activities (Fractivities) to share with students and also contains a list of national science and math educational standards addressed by fractals. The Sierpinski Triangle activity illustrates the fundamental principles of fractals – how a pattern can repeat again and again at different scales and how this complex shape can be formed by simple repetition.

Learn about fractals by playing bingo! In this activity, 30 or fewer students can play bingo and learn about fractals at the same time. Note that the pages are to be used for “lines” bingo rather than blackout bingo, since all pages have the same images but in different locations.
