Foreline traps are placed between a high-vacuum pump and backing pump or between a chamber and roughing pump. The primary application is preventing oil vapor migration from the backing/rough pump backwards along the foreline (backstreaming).

2019年11月12日 · The foreline valve and the holding valve serve to isolate the diffusion pump, the baffle and cold trap from the roughing line. When roughing has been completed (at approximately 20 mtorr), the roughing valve is closed before the foreline valve and the hi-vac valve are opened.
The standard DS 42 foreline pump is a two-stage Rotary Vane Pump (RVP) and uses a pump oil.
When the gas hits the cooled walls of the pump, it condenses and returns to the bottom of the pump for reheating, while the air particles are pulled from the diffusion pump through a “foreline” by the mechanical pump. A diffusion pump cannot operate without this foreline pumping.
