There are several types of hormone therapy for breast cancer. Most types of hormone therapy either lower estrogen levels in the body or stop estrogen from helping breast cancer cells grow. These drugs work by stopping estrogen from fueling breast cancer cells to grow.

Hormone receptor-positive breast cancers need estrogen (a female hormone) to grow. Aromatase inhibitors lower estrogen levels in the body by blocking aromatase, an enzyme that converts other hormones into estrogen. This slows or stops the growth of the tumor by preventing the cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow.
