The complement system is a part of the innate immune system that enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells. It consists of three pathways: classical, alternative, and lectin, that activate a cascade of proteases and generate C3b, C5a, and the membrane attack complex.
