A flare or decoy flare is an aerial infrared countermeasure used by an aircraft to counter an infrared homing ("heat-seeking") surface-to-air missile or air-to-air missile.

When infrared missiles seek out the hotter temperature, aircrews deploy the flares to mimic an aircraft in afterburn or the beginning of the engine's exhaust source and redirect the threat.

When an aircraft is threatened by radar tracking missiles, chaff is ejected into the turbulent wake of air behind the plane. The two C-130 aircraft took off from the Niagara Falls Reserve Station and headed north over Lake Ontario to complete their live-fire flare training.
