Buchanan Street is renowned for its variety in high street shopping, including flagship stores, with rents on the street being as much as £250 per square foot (£2,700 per square metre), making it the sixth most expensive street in the United Kingdom for retail rent, only surpassed by five streets in London. Buchanan Street is one of the main shopping streets in Glasgow and is home to a variety of high-street and high-end shops, as well as restaurants and cafes. The street is also known for its Victorian architecture, including the Buchanan Galleries, a large shopping center.

Stretching from Sauchiehall Street down to St Enoch Square, Buchanan Street is the city's main pedestrian boulevard. It is probably the city’s best shopping area and is decidedly smarter and more upmarket than the neighbouring Argyle Street, and Sauchiehall Street.

Buchanan Street was named after Andrew Buchanan, a Tobacco Lord, who envisioned that Glasgow would spread westward.

With its richly ornamented Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings as a backdrop, Buchanan Street is GlasgowÍs grandest promenade and the true heart of the city. Along its length it contains numerous shops, two arcades, two major shopping centers, a museum and library, and a design centre.
