BNSF's symbols are pretty straightforward, you have a single letter prefix the denotes the type of train; Z, Q, P, and S are all intermodal prefixes Z trains for premium service, Q for Quality service, P for Premium service and S for Stack trains. HPT or horsepower per ton falls for each descending type of service.

In track warrant territory, it is VERY unusual that a BNSF dispatcher will call a train on the radio using the train symbol. This is for two reasons: 1) the track warrant authority used is a mandatory directive (GCOR 2.14), and 2) the BNSF computerized track warrant computer displays eng initial/number on most screens.

This past weekend I caught a few BNSF trains running on the Emporia Sub south of KC. Having some knowledge of the symbols on some of the trains I saw that day, I came away with a few questions. Here's an example of such. BNSF Train Z WSPSTO9 24L. I know this is a High Priority Type Train that runs from Willow Springs Ill to Stockton Ca.

Could anyone out there in TO land find the symbols for the BNSF 5134 West and the BNSF 6613 East for me? These two stack trains met at Oreapolis Nebraska (on the Creston Sub) around 1:00 this afternoon. Both trains were all stacks--no trailers. The BNSF does run a Chgo-Den intermodal train but it usually has stacks and trailers.

On UP, a BNSF Q becomes an I train (e.g. Q MEMRIC6 -> 6IMPRRJ), so if a Q CLOOIG3 did run it would be a 3ICLOAJ. They're not running any QPVRBJ's, only QPVS8J's, this has been practice for at least the last couple of years that I've been paying attention.
