Ava Faulkner (Jessica Chastain) is a recovering addict and former soldier turned assassin. In France, she kidnaps her new target, an English businessman Peter Hamilton (Ioan Gruffudd), a financial advisor to the International Monetary Fund. Ava picks up Hamilton from the airport, pretending to be his chauffeur.

This film is centred on Ava Faulkner, an assassin with addiction problems and a desire to know why her victims are being targeted. This latter quirk bothers her employers. Duke, her direct superior and father figure wants to protect her but others, higher up, believe she is a liability.

Ava is a recovering alcoholic. Her previous use and life as an addict is mentioned mulitple times and there's one particular scene where she looks into a mini bar and focusses on the mini alcohol bottles.

Due to his history with domestic violence and public pressure, Matthew Newton stepped down from directing the film. Jessica Chastain contacted her friend Tate Taylor as she rushed to hire someone she trusted and knew could be ready in short notice.
