Dec 19, 2005 · People making arm started on the less than 1 watt cpu and focused on low power one all along, exact opposite of x86, their relative strength is probably 90%+ due to that than instruction sets strategy, ARM decoder is quite simpler in exchange to bigger binary more memory read and cache miss, hard to say which end up better for low power.

Dec 13, 2008 · Ideally you would be able to run ARM or x86 programs on ARM or x86 hardware, and if there is a mismatch, the emulation layer will handle it and you wouldn't even notice. Ideally this would be without any major penalties, similar to running 32-bit x86 programs on a 64-bit x86 Windows version.

Aug 29, 2010 · A shitty arm laptop with 10W have the same single core performance of a ryzen 5900 and the same performance of an Intel 9700k in multithread on emulated x86 app. Doing some maths it's not difficult to understand that arm processor will be faster then every x86 in one or two years at most.

Dec 19, 2005 · I really hope Nvidia is working with Valve right now. If consumer Nvidia hardware ships with SteamOS it will be a much bigger deal. If your going to have to rely on something like proton for x86->arm for gaming why do you want microsofts terrible UI/OS. The only reason to use windows is decades of direct comparability.

Dec 19, 2005 · ARM is just another instruction set. It is the underlying architecture that makes the big difference. Provided with the right underlying architecture, x86 can pretty much to everything ARM does (we saw this with Intel's Moorefield SoC's), and ARM can pretty much do everything x86 can do (as Apple has demonstrated with their M series chips)

It is roughly 2x the emulation speed of the Pi 4 while not forcing you to work-arund anything not yet ported to ARM. It also comes with Windows! If ARM goes bankrupt and doesn't actually make improvements to their ARM CPU design, then the dominating force over ARM will be Apple and Qualcomm, and last I checked they don't directly compete.

Jul 13, 2006 · x86 is an valuable artificial moat, if you can use the law and government to block your competitor it is interesting, versus going head on against Nvidia and others in the ARM business, the moment you make an interesting market for an ARM cpu, better find a way to lock like Apple, because soon everyone will make it.
