When will Apple drop macOS support for M1 systems?
2023年3月12日 · There's not a lot of publicly known SoC sub-components in M2 that aren't also in M1. If Apple decides, for instance to make having ProRes Encode/Decode engines a requirement for the operating system due to a fundamental feature, then you might see M1 Macs dropped, while M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max, and newer keep support.

2020年11月19日 · Using the latest beta of Chrome, it doesn't appear to be using the M1 for hardware decode for 4K VP9, or AV1. I imagine Chrome calls VideoToolbox, so it should be architecture independent. Although, YouTube on iOS with an A14 does smoothly decode 4K VP9, so I'm assuming it's Chrome related. Safari does use hardware decoding for 4K VP9 though.

You can do crazy fast (180-220 fps) hardware encoding via VideoToolbox for HD content (x264/265) but the file size and quality is sub optimal. Using software encoding 264->265 1080p runs about 30fps, which isn’t bad!
