As a matter of fact, I've deliberately reduced the power on my repeater to 15 watts to provide a better balance between transmit range and receive range. My repeater is currently located at my house and the antenna is at a 42' height.

What got me Into it is my son's school bus firststudent has a similar system where the busses have some sort of Motorola radio and the base station. My gmrs call sign is WRBQ935. I could get 30-40mi away in one direction to a 50w mobile and in other directions just a couple of miles to a hand held outdoors due to terrain.

I used to be pretty active on GMRS, mobiles, bases, handhelds and even a repeater. I had a lot of opportunities to play around with different settings.
