I noticed early on that the electric oil pressure gauge was showing only about 5 psi @ idle after the engine was hot. ( showed 20+ when cold). After engine break-in period I went to a heavier 20W50 oil and it was a little better.

At the very least use a coil such as the Standard-BlueStreak #UC16 or NAPA Echlin #IC27. It's best, though, to use a coil intended for use with a high energy ignition system.

According to your description, though, the vehicle was probably modified. A later 318 could have been installed; the redesign to the LA version was implemented for the 1967 model year.
