Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, commonly known as pine wood nematode or pine wilt nematode (PWN), is a species of nematode that infects trees in the Pinus genus of coniferous trees and causes the disease pine wilt.

Xylophilus (from greek: xylon – "wood"; philus – "friend, loving") is a genus of bacteria, which includes bacteria that cause plant disease. Strains are available from international collections, such as the NCPPB in the United Kingdom, for legitimate researchers and plant disease diagnosticians working in premises licensed to hold it.

2011年9月1日 · Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is the nematode responsible for a devastating epidemic of pine wilt disease in Asia and Europe, and represents a recent, independent origin of plant parasitism in nematodes, ecologically and taxonomically distinct from other nematodes for which genomic data is available.

Most Bursaphelenchus species are fungal feeding nematodes that colonize dead or dying trees. However, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pine wood nematode, is also a pathogen of trees and is the causal agent of pine wilt disease. B. xylophilus is native to North America and here it causes little damage to trees.

The pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is widespread and abundant on native pine forests of North America, particularly in the eastern USA. It is ubiquitous in a wide range of climates, from subtropical to sub-boreal, but is not considered as a serious pest on this continent, except for on exotic or damaged pines.
