I have a 14 Diesel Cruz. I bought used with 10K miles on it. It has 20K now. The "reduced engine power" warning came on and the turbo stopped working. I took it to the dealer. They said the diesel particulate filter was clogged because the car never completed a "regen" to clean it. The car is supposed to do this on it's own, but never did.

I think GM was on the right track with the diesel cars of the late 70's and early 80's. Problem is, in true GM form, they didn't outsource their engine. If you get one of the older TDI's make sure you avoid the auto tranny (01M) which was a POS. Apart from that, with regular upkeep (correct oil, TB changes etc) these cars can last for many many miles. The 2011 models are said to be cheaper (VW trying to gain market share) so some might go for new over used.

A very trained ear can tell it is diesel but for normal folks it is almost impossible to know as the typical diesel "knocking" sound almost completely disappears after engine warms up. I have driven some Audi rental cars in Germany and can tell that an A6 Sports line with the 3.0 TDI is something very nice to drive FAST.
