The softer one is some kind of spiffy stainless steel that Mora (Sweden) and Diamond (Taiwan) use for their farrier's (171, 188, D= 271) knives. Re: Best tools for relief carving? Carpenter's tools = 30 degrees included bevel. Wood carving tools = 20 degrees included bevel angle. Wood carving knives = 12-15 degrees. I don't understand the reluctance to admit what the most useful bevel angles really are. Without that, you can screw up the most expensive of steels and wonder why.

The whole set is offered for less than the cost of just a few of the "high-end" tools and their set includes a high quality tool roll to boot.

2013年7月27日 · Re: What brand of micro carving tools? Ditto pallin. Sets are either missing a tool that you discover that you really need badly or the set has 1+ tools that you never find a use for. Don't know about the others BUT, Pfeil tools are open stock = buy whatever you need. At the end of the day, that saves a lot of money.

Leather strop for honing, saburtooth bits. Lotion for my hands when I'm done carving, because they're super dry while carving. I've been eyeing the Pfeil tools.

Mallet tools work the best because you have the better control. I believe the most importan thing with carving hard woods is having the patience to work slowly making shallow cuts.

Do as Brian T suggests (above), decide what type of carving you want to do first. Edit: I see you have answered his suggestion. Buy a #1 chip carving knife.
