Staurolite is a mineral that is commonly found in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss. It forms when shale is strongly altered by regional metamorphism. It is often found in association with almandine garnet, muscovite, and kyanite - minerals that form under similar temperature and pressure conditions.

A 2.5 cm, sharp, lustrous, brown staurolite crystal is aesthetically set in a cabinet-sized matrix of sculptural, sparkly biotite schist. Staurolite is known from the much less common Petaca District of New Mexico, but is rarely seen and is very rarely available.

The thin section contains many small, inclusion poor grains of staurolite, which is a high relief mineral pleochroic with colours ranging from pale yellow to almost colourless in plane polarised light, and with low birefringence colours in crossed polars.
