Skeletal remains of the Mary Rose
Human skeletal remains. Many lives were lost when the Mary Rose sank on 19 th July 1545, with only circa 30 survivors reported out of hundreds of crew, sailors, soldiers, gunners and gentlemen.. Not all of those lost have been recovered, but archaeologists were able to excavate around 9,000 human skeletal elements in the 1970s and 1980s.

Exploring the crew. We know from contemporary naval accounts that in addition to the crew of mariners, soldiers and gunners, the larger vessels also had a sailing master (navigator), a bosun, a lieutenant, a surgeon, a carpenter, a purser, a cook, and a master gunner.

Nine different species of wood have been identified within the arrows studied, but most are poplar. The total length ranged from 667mm-880mm, with most between 715-845, giving predicted draw lengths of 712mm and 762mm (28-30 inches).
