It began building steam-powered, horse-drawn fire engines in the era before the internal combustion engine and merged with LaFrance in 1903 to become one of America's leading fire engine builders.

Council on Jan. 21 passed an ordinance declaring a 2000 American LaFrance fire engine obsolete and authorizing its sale to the city of East Cleveland. A sales price of $1,500 has been set.
