The Trump administration is still trying to convince Americans that tariffs will save the economy, even as the stock market hemorrhages cash. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt got into a heated back and forth with an Associated Press reporter on Tuesday in which she revealed that she really doesn’t understand how tariffs affect consumers—or at least is totally willing to lie about it.

President Donald Trump says he believes tariffs are a panacea: a catch-all economic tool that can restore America’s manufacturing prowess, bring foreign nations to heel on key disputes, restore the balance of trade and bring in gobs of money that can help pay off the US deficit and reduce Americans’ tax burdens.
