Direct seeding early spring veggies is a great way to get out in the garden this time of year and requires less work than growing transplants indoors.

Dilmore advises sowing cucumbers directly into the soil once it’s thawed in March, and shares another tip, “Many farmers recommend cucumbers be planted on mounds of elevated soil which allows water to easily drain away from the base of the plants and helps its creeping growth habit.”

“Just physically being outside in the garden, bending over, weeding the garden, being part of the harvest and just getting fresh air is so tremendously good for you,” she said. “I’ve seen a lot of healing happening in gardens.”

Depending on which climate zone you live in, you may even see your last frosts before March is over. More northern areas will still see plenty of snow and cold weather, but, importantly, March brings closer that all-important last frost date.
