At 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 12, the EA-18G Growler, which is based on Whidbey Island, Washington, crashed while attempting to land on Coronado.

The U.S. Navy has issued a public notice to stay away from the wreckage and any debris from a crashed EA-18G Growler plane in San Diego Bay, which is still in the water off of Shelter Island.

Navy divers and salvage crews have begun recovering pieces of the jet that went down near Shelter Island. The operation could take as long as two weeks to complete.

Navy officials did not disclose how the wreckage may be recovered. Last winter, after a Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk crashed into the bay, the helicopter was lifted from 15 feet of water and stabilized on a barge. It was then offloaded onto a pier at Naval Base Coronado. The operation took 10 hours.
