With a Z80 microprocessor board plugged in ... the faster IIGS had better graphics and sound. It ran Apple II software, but required GS software to use the enhanced features.
This can make it difficult if you want to output full-bitmap graphics on the Apple II – but it is certainly possible. [cybernesto] set about completing this task, and released VBMP on GitHub.
