Actually, the T station (South Side) is about a block and half away from the incline. Just remember although a number of downtown stops are part of a free zone you have to pay to ride to the South Side Station. Plus you need to purchase a round trip fare or the incline. They do have a day pass that was $7 the last time I looked. You can google the Allegheny Transit Authority for more info.
Can you ride the wheelchair onto the incline itself? We tried to do the Duquesne Incline a few years back which is not handicapped accessible, but they said the Monongahela one is....we just couldn't find parking.

We got there at 8 AM and parked on a side street 2 streets from the incline. Walked up to the top of the incline and then down to the incline station I believe it is handicapped accessible. …
