The weather would probably be much nicer in May and the Buffalo start calving in mid-April so you would have a better chance to see babies in May.

We stayed in a great bnb: Lark Inn on Cottonwood, Strong City. There are other bnb's owned by the same owner in town. The town is interesting and there is a vegetarian restaurant, which was unfortunately closed when we were there. We picked up a rental car at the airport and drove straight here and visited the national park the next day.
