The fortress is sadly not open to visitors, you can peek in through the gates and walk around the exterior. The walk along the promenade is worth doing, go past the station and there are several nice sea front bars near the pier. We also enjoyed ambling around the streets of the town - we were on a cruise and did not want to take tours to Rome which cost a fortune and gave you only a glimpse of the city.
