One reviewer mentioned parking is right in front of the museum, while across Cary Street is a large parking lot. Which would be more advisable? Can a visitor use the larger lot if no street parking is available?
答:
The lot in front of the museum was free, and good sized. So I would suggest it first, but you usually ample parking unless there is something going on in Shockoe.

I had avoided going because I had the same worries, but planned it as an activity early in the day, with a canal boat tour after. I also told myself that I could leave should the experience become too intense. Even though it was extremely sobering and such a sad commentary on the depravity dealt and undergone, I was not brought to tears - I think because I, as most people, knew the gruesome general history. I had no difficulty in completing the tour, and felt enlightened and closer to the victimized at the end - they had so much to endure at every turn. I was mesmerized by being able to see actual clothes and belongings of people living through that terrible time.

Do you have to make an appt for a tour and did I understand in one of the reviews there are actual survivors that are there?

Self guided tours do not require a reservation, but if you have a large group and want a docent-led tour, you can make a reservation on the website. There are sometimes Holocaust Survivors at the museum for special occasions and events, but only a few times a year.
