I have seen people carry shoulder bags into Carnegie Hall. I am not too sure if they will check it or not. You might want to call Carnegie Hall if you have a question.
Does Carnegie Hall have a strict policy against bringing backpacks to performances? I'm attending a performance after my classes and won't have time to drop my bookbag off home before I arrive.

I have not seen anyone lug a backpack into the room but people do bring rather large purses and briefcases. I would call the theater directly on this.
